The Intel Extreme Masters is one of a few tournaments that has run for over a decade now on the esports professional scene, with their first collaboration with ESL coming in 2006 when they organised an IEM for Counter-Strike 1.6 and Warcraft III.
The Intel Extreme Masters will return to China for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID pandemic. IEM Chengdu 2024 will be the first international Counter-Strike event to be held in the country since the start of 2020. Since announcing that the IEM Spring tournament will take place in 2024, several other esports leagues have followed suit by announcing events in China.
