Esports on the incline in South Africa

Kiran Maharaj, chairperson of the University Sports South Africa eSport committee, says that esports is on the rise in SA universities. Over the last year, 17 university teams have joined the esports community.

The industry is still new to the country, and there are some challenges ahead; for example, bandwidth problems and the lack of a dedicated esports federation. However, Maharaj says that students are interested in getting involved, and there’s no need to persuade or encourage them to form teams and join.

The lockdown due to COVID-19 initially presented some issues but has since put esports in the front seat in modern sports engagement.

FOR THE WIN ESPORTS vs ELECTRONIK GENERATION LPLOL SUMMER BETTING PREVIEW

For The Win Esports and Electronik Generation will clash on the Summoner’s Rift this Monday during the sixth week of Liga Portuguesa de League of Legends (LPLOL) 2020 Summer.

Electronik enter the final week of the LPLOL Summer regular season with an 11-1 record, which guarantees them first place as they’re three wins ahead of both SAMCLAN Esports Club and For The Win Esports. Their only loss this split came against SAMCLAN during Week 2, since when Ruben “Worst” Correia and co. have produced a seven-game winning streak.

Looking back at Week 5, Electronik defeated both GeekCase eSports and SAMCLAN in one-sided affairs. While GeekCase showed some resistance in the early stages of the game, Electronik had no issues defeating SAMCLAN and ended the game with +15 kill differential and +12.9k gold lead.

There is no hiding the fact that Electronik Generation are by far the strongest team in the LPLOL. Considering how dominant they looked against second-placed SAMCLAN, it’s hard to imagine this game will play out any differently. Having said that, there is still a question of motivation.

Since Electronik have already won the league, they have nothing to lose or gain in their last two fixtures. This suggests they might look to test out new drafts and tactics in their final two outings of the regular season, which could give For The Win Esports a chance to lock in a top-three finish.

For The Win enter this bout with an 8-4 record, which ties them with SAMCLAN at second place. Although their record is far from perfect, most of their losses came during Week 3 and the start of Week 4 when they lost to Electronik Esports, SAMCLAN and Boavista FC.

Since then, For The Win have managed a four-game winning streak, which they earned by defeating OFFSET Esports, GTZ Bulls, ?Karma Clan Esports and ?GeekCase eSports. Even though they did not face tough opponents, we can’t discredit their dominant wins.

FTW mid laner Marcos “Xaky” Letras has been playing surprisingly well and the same goes for support Bruno “Linkz” Martins and jungler Tiago “Own3r” Mendes. The trio are averaging 8.0, 8.0 and 5.23 KDA numbers respectively, while Linkz also boasts the second-highest KPAR (75.8%) out of all supports in the league.

The weakest link in this team is top laner Alexandre “Truklax” Rodrigues, who is averaging 3.64 KDA and 55.5% KPAR, but we can cut him some slack since he is playing on the weak side.

FOR THE WIN ESPORTS vs ELECTRONIK GENERATION LPLOL SUMMER BETTING PREDICTIONS

Even though Electronik Generation have a far better record this split, there is not a lot to separate them from For The Win Esports in terms of overall quality. Both teams have great players who should match up nicely and give us an exciting game to watch.

There is, however, one problem we have with For The Win. While André “Afm” Martins is a solid player, he has failed to impress this split and is currently ranked as the fourth-best ADC main in the league, which could be an issue in this clash.

Worst has been far more efficient as a marksman and his 9.88 KDA compared to Afm’s 3.85 indicates there is a huge gap between the two. The current meta heavily relies on a strong bottom lane and while FTW have one of the best supports in the league, we are not too optimistic about Afm’s chances to dominate in his section.

This game has the potential to be a bloody match with plenty of kills across the board, but when push comes to shove, Electronik Generation should come out victorious.

SAMCLAN ESPORTS CLUB vs OFFSET ESPORTS LPLOL SUMMER BETTING PREVIEW

SAMCLAN Esports Club and OFFSET Esports will clash for the second time this split on Wednesday during the fifth week of Liga Portuguesa de League of Legends (LPLOL) 2020 Summer.

SAMCLAN entered the LPLOL as one of the favourites to claim the title following their third-place finish in the LPLOL Spring playoffs. Last split, they finished the regular season third with an impressive 9-5 record but failed to deliver in the semi-finals, where they lost to the eventual champions and current league frontrunners, Electronik Generation.

During the off-season, SAMCLAN did not make any roster changes. While they parted ways with top laner Luís “Flash” Cerqueira at the start of June, that should not affect them too much considering they still have Rúben “F4rg” Fernandes at their disposal.

Throughout this split, SAMCLAN have won seven out of 10 games played. Their three losses came against OFFSET Esports, GeekCase eSports and Boavista FC, but it’s worth noting that those results happened in early June when SAMCLAN were struggling with their form. Since then, they have managed a perfect 6-0 run with wins against ?Electronik Generation, GTZ Bulls, ?For The Win Esports, Karma Clan Esports, ?Boavista FC and GeekCase eSports.

Pedro “Gotzy” Rego has been playing well for SAMCLAN this split. He is averaging by far the highest KDA (17.33) in the league and is widely regarded as the best ADC in the LPLOL. Although his teammates don’t boast double-digit KDA numbers, top laner F4rg, jungler David “Travanques” Bonjardim, mid laner Paulo “Noma” Rebocho and support Diogo “Calmsky” Sousa are all ranked among the best-performing players in their respective roles.

The individual quality of SAMCLAN is admirable, but it’s hard to ignore OFFSET Esports and what they bring to the table.

OFFSET established their League of Legends project in May when they acquired top laner Flash, who teamed up with four ex-Cidade Curiosa Esports players in jungler Tiago “Time” Almeida, mid laner Guilherme “Blizz” Rodrigues, support Miguel “Migas” Andrade and ADC Jo?o “Scutt” Cunha.

Flash and co. have looked solid this split, especially considering Cidade Curiosa Esports managed only a 4-10 record last time. So far, they have won six out of 10 games played, which includes wins against GeekCase, GTZ Bulls, Karma Clan, SAMCLAN and twice against Boavista. Although solid results, OFFSET hit a bit of a slump last week when they lost to Electronik Generation and ?For The Win Esports, although they are two of the strongest teams in the division.

ADC Scutt is by far the best-performing player in this team with a 5.0 KDA, 8.45 CSPM, 67.4% KPAR and 26.2% KS. His teammate Blizz also deserves some praise since he is keeping pace with the best mid laners in the league thanks to a 3.74 KDA, 7.99 CSPM, 71.6% KPAR and 31.9% KS.

SAMCLAN ESPORTS CLUB vs OFFSET ESPORTS LPLOL SUMMER BETTING PREDICTIONS

These teams last met during Week 2, when OFFSET Esports managed a shock win they did not really deserve. The match was fairly one-sided throughout with SAMCLAN holding a firm grasp of the game for over 50 minutes before they let OFFSET pick up the Baron buff and lost as a result.

Although SAMCLAN enter this match as the favourites, the odds offered on them are way too high. They have displayed all the qualities needed to compete for the title, which is something we can’t say about OFFSET.

It seems like the esports bookmakers are putting too much weight on OFFSET’s win against SAMCLAN two weeks ago, which gives us a great opportunity to side with Gotzy and his team at generous odds.

X6TENCE VS S2V ESPORTS LVP SLO Spring 2020 BETTING PREVIEW

X6tence and S2V Esports will clash for the second time this split in the opening fixture of Week 7 of the Liga de Videojuegos Profesional Navbox SuperLiga Orange (LVP SLO).

X6tence will enter the Monday’s bout hungry for a win, knowing that a defeat would make their chances of securing a playoffs berth extremely slim, while a win would put them in a very favourable position to advance into the next stage.

In six competitive weeks that have passed in the LVP SLO Spring Split, x6tence produced a mixed bag of results. Although they looked fairly strong against some weaker teams, x6tence struggled to cause any serious damage to the top dogs. They did, however, defeat MAD Lions Madrid in the final match of Week 6.

X6tence started the match against MAD Lions Madrid well and got themselves into an early lead, however, fell behind in the mid-late game, allowing their adversaries to run away with a 4k gold lead, at which point x6tence started to push back.

Approximately 34 minutes into the game, Jordi “Jorx” Pi secured the Elder Drake for his team, which helped them win a crucial team fight, take down Baron and turn the game upside down. After claiming Baron and Elder buff, x6tence did not hesitate to make one final push to secure an upset win, which kept them in the race for the playoffs.

Although Jorx played a crucial role in his team’s success with his sneaky Elder Dragon takedown, it was x6tence’s newest addition to the team – Ernesto “Siler” Casta?eda who put up a standout performance, ending the game with 10/3/3 KDA on Ryze.

The 2019 Iberian Cup semi-finalists have been struggling with their performances throughout the whole season as they only managed to win 23% of their games. S2V will enter Week 7 of the competition with an underwhelming 3-10 record next to their name, which sits them at ninth place in the league standings.

Although one of their wins came against x6tence during Week 3, S2V’s overall form suggests they won’t be able to repeat their success this Monday, as they enter the bout with a disastrous 1-4 run over the course of last two weeks.

Looking back, Sander “Barcode” Laidre and his squad defeated G2 Arctic in their opening fixture of Week 5, to which they added two losses against MAD Lions Madrid and UCAM Esports Club. S2V continued their losing streak into Week 6, where they lost to Team Questo and BCN Squad.

S2V’s bout with BCN was fairly close for the first part of the game, with teams going back and forth, trying to get ahead, but to no avail. That is until the 16th minute when BCN took advantage of S2V’s questionable four-man Rift Harold attempt, which ended badly for Barcode and his men as they lost three of their members on top of handing BCN a free Harold.

From that point onward, it was BCN who took the reins of the match into their hands and slowly increased the lead to a point where S2V had nothing else to do than to watch their Nexus get destroyed. BCN’s bottom lane tandem Nicolás “Nixerino” Colocho and Adrián “Homi” Moldes López were the driving force behind BCN’s triumph, while S2V’s bottom lane duo left a lot to be desired.

X6TENCE VS S2V ESPORTS LVP SLO SPRING BETTING PREDICTIONS

Although S2V already defeated x6tence once before this split, it’s hard to side with the team that has failed to show anything noteworthy in the last two competitive weeks. Even their win over G2 Arctic back in Week 5 was not so much a result of S2V’s superior gameplay, but rather G2 Arctic’s misplay at around 30 minute-mark that turned the tides of the match into S2V’s favour.

X6tence have shown much more quality in recent fixtures and considering defeat will not be an option for Jorx and the company, we can expect them to make sparks fly in their rematch with S2V
BetOnline is offering $1.82 on -4.5 kills handicap on x6tence, which seems like the best bet to take here, as S2V tend to make way too many risky plays, which more times than not backfire.

BOAVISTA FC VS SAMCLAN ESPORTS CLUB LPLOL SPRING 2020 BETTING PREVIEW

The fourth match of Week 6 fixtures at Liga Portuguesa League of Legends (LPLOL) 2020 Spring will see Boavista take on SAMCLAN in what promises to be an exciting bout between two of Portugal’s strongest LoL esports teams.

Boavista will enter the sixth week of the competition with a 4-6 record to their name, which sits them in tied-fourth spot in the league standings. Bruno “Bp” Pombal’s men have hit a slump of late, however, with consecutive defeats against Estoril Praia eSports, GTZ Bulls and most recently the league’s top dog, For The Win Esports.

In their bout with GTZ Bulls last week, Boavista fell behind in the early following a well-executed four-man bottom lane collapse by their adversaries. Despite being only two kills down, they could not find their footing, which was due in part to their poor team fighting. Bulls built up to a 2k gold lead by the 10th minute, after which they raced away to a 35-8 win with a 15k gold advantage.

Boavista’s poor performance stretched into their clash with For The Win Esports. The match ended in just under 33 minutes, with the scoreline showing 23-1 in favour of FTW as well as a 20k gold lead.

SAMCLAN enter Week 6 of LPLOL Spring with a respectable 6-4 record, which sits them at third place in the league and within arm’s of the playoffs. With only four games left this split, winning this bout will be crucial for SAMCLAN considering they still need to face Estoril Praia eSports, Electronik Generation and For The Win Esports, with the latter two being the strongest teams in the league.

Unlike Boavista, who have found themselves in a downward spiral, SAMCLAN Esports Club found their stride in Week 5 when they bested GeekCase eSports and GTZ Bulls to secure their second 2-0 week of the split.

SAMCLAN’s win over GeekCase eSports was expected and although it was not as clean as Paulo “Noma” Rebocho’s squad would have hoped, they managed to pull away in the mid-game with their superior macro play. The crucial fight took place at 25-minute mark when SAMCLAN secured the Baron and closed out the match only four minutes later.

In their clash with GTZ Bulls, SAMCLAN were trailing for most of the game and even came close to losing their Nexus on several occasions, but they managed to hold off GTZ’s advances for long enough to scale and turn the tide. Despite their slow start and a couple of questionable decisions in the early game, SAMCLAN showed a lot of good qualities, including solid macro play and a great idea of their win condition.

BOAVISTA FC VS SAMCLAN ESPORTS CLUB LPLOL SPRING BETTING PREDICTIONS

Boavista will enter this bout priced as favourites, which is interesting to see when you consider that SAMCLAN boast the better form and defeated Boavista in the second week of the split.

It seems like esports bookmakers are underestimating SAMCLAN. Although their impressive comeback against GTZ Bulls was in part due to the Karthus’ scaling, it is clear that SAMCLAN have great synergy and a clever overall approach to the game. Boavista, however, showed neither of those qualities in their losses last week, and it is hard to expect they will suddenly improve here.

Boavista might have slightly better individual quality on the field, but their poor displays against GTZ Bulls and For The Win Esports suggest they will struggle to justify the tag of favourites.

Although Moche XL Esports 2019 was announced way back in April, we had to wait until this week to find out the complete schedule. The number of teams has not changed since last year, but this time there are five invitees along with one qualifier from Masters League Portugal S3. As per 2018, the six combatants will compete in a single-elimination bracket format.

The five invited teams are BIG, FURIA Esports, Team GamerLegion, Virtus.pro and Windigo Gaming, with the winner of Masters League Portugal to be decided on June 15 – only a few hours before Moche XL 2019 is scheduled to kick off.

As the two top seeds, Windigo Gaming and FURIA advance directly into the semi-finals, leaving the remaining four teams to fight it out in the quarter-finals for the two remaining spots in the semis.

The opening clash at Moche XL Esports 2019 is a rematch between Poland’s Virtus.pro and Germany’s BIG, who met recently in the CS:GO Europe Minor closed qualifiers (BIG 2-0). After the dust settles from that grudge match, GamerLegion and the MLP S3 winner will do battle for a spot in the last four.

The winner of BIG vs Virtus.pro will then face off against Windigo Gaming, while the winner of the second pair will get to test their skills against FURIA Esports.

The grand finals will take place on June 17, with the winners taking home $40,000 and the runners-up collecting $20,000.

The post Report: European esports market is officially worth $209 million appeared first on Esport Bet.

]]>
The European esports market will generate US $209 million in revenue by the end of this year, according to a new esports white paper published by NewZoo and sponsored by Esports Bar.

Despite only capturing just 20 per cent of the global esports audience, Europe as a whole accounts for 32 per cent of the worldwide esports economy’s revenues ($660 million), making it the second largest esports market in the world. North America currently generates 36 percent, while Asia, the third largest market, accounts for 27 per cent.

By the end of this year, European video game consumers will buy $22 billion in game software revenues, the esports audience in the region will total 77 million and media rights revenues will grow 500 per cent from 2016 to 2020 alone.

NewZoo’s end-of-year report also provides an in-depth look at four of Europe’s most esports obsessed countries – Germany, Poland, Spain and Sweden – and analysed their esports audiences and live streaming viewership for major events. With 4.1 million esports fans, Spain has the biggest audience in the region but their 687 professional players are just one-third of Sweden’s 1,836 recorded talent. Sweden and Poland recorded lower esports fans in comparison, with only around half a million and 2.8 million, respectively.

Germany is home to the second largest esports audience in Europe at 3.4 million and produced the most professional esports players, with 2,317 German gamers going on to play in the big leagues. These figures are not as surprising, given the country is the birthplace of the Electronic Sports League.

In terms of prize money and social media popularity, Sweden’s pro players earned their keep, with $22.3 million won and over 350,000 fans following local fan-favourite League of Legends player Rekkles on Facebook and Twitter. Poland’s pro gaming community trailed second-last, with $6.7 million in prize money earned, but their star CS:GO player Pasha raked in the most social media followers on Facebook, with 833,000 fans following him on the platform.

The esports industry globally has had a massive year and NewZoo believes Europe will continue to be a big part of that growth, partly because of the rising number of esports fans who don’t even play any of the popular competitive games they watch. Around 26% of European CS:GO, Dota 2 and League of Legends viewers fit the bill, which isn’t as surprising a trend this year given other popular esports like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds have recorded larger viewership (up to 15 times more) than than their actual active player bases.

Depending on how these factors continue to play out in the coming two years, NewZoo’s report ultimately believes the esports industry’s growth could reach $2.4 billion in 2020 “in an optimistic scenario”, significantly higher than their base scenario assessment of $1.5 billion. SuperData’s own estimates place the esport industry’s growth to $1.9 billion.
